There’s just Ruby and her mum Rita, bouncing from place to place, job to job and boyfriend to boyfriend to try to avoid going completely going under. Life is hard but Rita keeps picking herself up and reapplying her lipstick, trying to do her best for Ruby.
When their beater car breaks down in Fat River, they end up staying. Ruby becomes BFFs with Peter Pan, a transgender waitress at the diner where her and Rita end up working, and life becomes really good for a while. But then the financial crisis hits and Ruby’s life begin to unravel again – but this time there’s more to lose.
Realistic YA with quirky characters and honest language (swears). A great portrayal of what is reality for many people struggling with everyday poverty.
